The waterfall is situated in the center of Kivach reserve 60 kms away from Petrozavodsk . A beautiful forest path goes to it. Approximately 30-40 thousand of tourists visit the place annually.
The Kivach Waterfall is the second largest after the Rhein flat land waterfall in Europe . The height of the waterfall is 10.7 meters. It is situated on the Suna river in Karelia .
It is the most famous waterfall of Karelia . Following the example of G. Derzhavin - the first Olonets governor and an outstanding poet, who in 1791 devoted an ode to it - the Kivach waterfall was glorifyed by other poets, artists and prose writers.
The destiny of the waterfull is unusual - after some of its waters were taken aside for the needs of Kondopozhskaja hydroelectric powerstation at the end of 30-ies, it lost its former wildness.
It wakes up only during spring floods, but not for a long time. However, in it is very beautiful even in its usual look. Condensed with the basalt rocks the waters of the Suna river fall down from a height of 8 meters, forming a powerfull foam whirpool.
Yet 20-30 years ago there was the Onego salmon in the waters of the waterfall, these days breams, perchs and pikes can be found there.
